Teatre Principal de Maó: Spain's oldest opera house
The history, auditorium and programme of the Teatre Principal in Maó, opened in 1829: what you can see there and how to make the most of your visit.
The Teatre Principal in Maó (Mahón) opened in 1829 and is the oldest opera house in Spain. It stands in the centre of Maó, on Costa d'en Deià, and is still the island's main stage for opera, music, theatre and dance.
A little history
The theatre was born in a town with a great love of Italian opera, a tradition that is still alive today. Over almost two centuries it has seen busy seasons and years of decline. After a full restoration it reopened in 2001 and regained its central place in Menorca's cultural life.
The auditorium
It is an Italian-style hall: a horseshoe-shaped stalls area surrounded by tiers of boxes. This layout gives good views and sound from almost every seat, and makes every performance feel intimate and elegant.
What's on
Opera: Maó has a long operatic tradition, and the opera seasons, such as those organised by the Amics de l'Òpera de Maó association, are among the most awaited events of the year.
Theatre and dance: companies from Menorca, the Balearic Islands and beyond.
Music: classical, jazz and contemporary concerts, plus local series.
Activities for families and schools, mostly during the school year.
Tips for your visit
Book early for opera and the most popular shows: they sell out quickly. Arrive a few minutes early to find your seat calmly; it is a historic building and the corridors are narrow. If you would like to see the auditorium without attending a performance, check whether guided tours are scheduled. Pair your evening with a stroll through Maó's old town and harbour.
